On Friday morning, Philadelphia City Council legislator Mark Squilla introduced the resolution for Avenue of the Roots. Councilmembers Kenyatta Johnson, Maria Quiñones-Sánchez, and Cindy Bass also co-sponsored the resolution. The resolution will honor The Roots with a street sign in Philly, which will be located at East Passyunk Avenue & South Street.

Once it is voted on and subsequently passed by Philadelphia City Council members on February 27, 2020, a dedication for the honor is slated to take place during the last week of May 2020, coinciding with this year’s Roots Picnic on May 30.

The street honoring came about through LeRoy McCarthy, an activist who has also been behind street sign honoring The Notorious B.I.G., Phife Dawg, and Tupac.

“I am happy that Avenue of the Roots is getting done, happy for hip-hop, happy for Philly and beyond. Plus, this is Black History Month in the making,” McCarthy said in an e-mail statement. “Congrats to The Roots and Team Roots for putting in the work over the years. This honor is well deserved.”

“It took hard work to get this done, and the overall efforts for hip-hop recognition, but this is bigger than me — doing it for the culture, and hip-hop don’t stop,” he added. “I’m looking forward to the street dedication in May 2020.”
